Keen to go on a trip but don’t have time to plan? No problem! We’ve done all the hard work for you. Here are six travel itineraries that showcase the best tourist destinations in the Northern Cape.
Road trip 1: Vibrant Kimberly and surrounds (6days/5nights)
Day 1 and 2: Arrive in Kimberley and book into your preferred accommodation. Go for dinner at the Kimberley Anne Hotel; explore the ‘City of Diamonds’ and visit the Big Hole.
Day 3: Enjoy a guided walking tour through Galeshewe, the oldest township in South Africa and visit Platfontein, home to the !Xun and Khwe community, and Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre.
Day 4 and 5: Explore the Battlefields Route. Visit the Magersfontein Museum and the town of Modder River (39km south of Kimberley). Have a drink at the Kimberley Diamond Brewing Company on the banks of the Modder River.
Day 6: Transfer back to Kimberley airport
Road trip 2: The secrets of the Kalahari (3 nights, 4 days)
Day 1: Transfer from Johannesburg or Cape Town on a scheduled flight to Upington Airport. Experience the rich cultural offerings along the Kalahari Red Dune Route. Have lunch at the historical Diamond T Coffee and Gift Shop. End your day with a dune dinner, stargazing and storytelling.
Day 2 & 3: An early-morning dune walk will show you the amazing biodiversity of this region. Enter the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and book in at the !Xaus Lodge. The vast 38 000km² reserve offers excellent large cat sightings.
Day 4: On your way back to Upington, stop at Orange River Cellars for lunch and a wine tasting experience (just make sure you have a designated driver).
Road trip 3: Wildlife, culture and pampering (5 night /6 days)
Day 1 and 2: From Upington Airport, drive to Tutwa Lodge on the border of the Augrabies Falls National Park.
Day 3: Visit the park and waterfall. After lunch, depart for the famous Riemvasmaak Hot Springs. Overnight in Kakamas and enjoy the local delicacies, like ‘Kalahari sushi’.
Day 4: Explore the wine and brandy cellars and stop at the local farmstalls. Overnight in Kanoneiland, the largest inhabited river island in the world.
Day 5: Enjoy a relaxing day at the spa.
Day 6: Head back to Upington Airport.
Road trip 4: Stargazing in Sutherland
Day 1: Drive from Cape Town to Sutherland. Check into your accommodation. Visit SALT in the afternoon for a guided tour of the observatory. After dinner, visit Sterland for an unforgettable stargazing experience.
Day 2 and 3: Start your day with an early morning walk, hike, bike ride or run and watch as the sun rise across the Karoo’s lonely landscape. After breakfast, discover the history of the town, and visit its newest addition, the Sutherland Planetarium. Stop at the local butcher to stock up on Karoo lamb and other delicacies before heading to Blesfontein Guest Farm (you’ll need a 4×4 or vehicle with good ground clearance). The farm offers self-catering accommodation and guided horse trails and walks, mountain biking, swimming, birdwatching and botanical walks. Watching the sun set over the escarpment is a must.
Day 4: Head back to Sterland in Sutherland for a quick fossil and botanical guided tour. Head back to Cape Town on the N1.
Road trip 5: The galactical, historical and natural wonders of Sutherland
Day 1: Travel to the outskirts of Sutherland and check into your accommodation at Rogge Cloof. Dating back to 1756, this farm has been transformed into a dark sky and biosphere reserve. Go on a guided game and fossil drive in the afternoon. Eat dinner at the restored historic farmhouse.
Day 2: Hike to the Salpeterkop Volcano. Explore the natural caves and discover traces of not only the Khoisan people, but also the remains of lions, eland and the extinct brown hyena. After a leisurely brunch, head to Sutherland for a guided town walk, visit the only private planetarium in South Africa and do a guided tour at SALT. Head to Rogge Cloof for an afternoon of wine tasting, dinner and stargazing.
Day 3: Head home after breakfast.
Road trip 6: Meander from the Cape to Namibia
Day 1: Depart Cape Town and have lunch in Garies on your way to the Namaqua National Park.
Day 2: Travel to Kamieskroon (22km from the park) for a Nama herder experience.
Day 3: Go for an early morning drive through the park and then head towards Springbok. Visit the Goegap Nature Reserve (18 km from Okiep). Overnight in Okiep
Day 4: After breakfast, leave for the Richtersveld World Heritage Site.
Day 5: Cross the Vioolsdrift border post and continue your journey to Namibia or, alternatively, head back home.
