Placerville Friends of Tibet are raising funds for Losar, the Tibetan Buddhist festival celebrating the Tibetan New Year, Feb. 12-14. Shanu from the 2018-19 tour is assisting with the festival at Ngari Khangtsen (Shanu’s dormitory) for 125 monks and Placerville Friends of Tibet has set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover the cost of meals. Mills Station Arts & Culture Center presents The 3rd Dimension, a sculpture exhibit through Feb. 20. This exhibit will explore three-dimensional works from greater Sacramento Area artists. Empty Bowls is seeking artists to donate bowls for the spring Empty Bowls Soup Supper, which helps raise funds to feed the hungry at the Upper Room Dining Hall in Placerville and for Earth’s Angels Farm in Winnebaga, Ghana. The bowls will be sold at a “to go” soup supper at the El Dorado Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 6. The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program is looking for volunteers to help prepare cold packs for home-delivered meals and the take-out meal service, Monday through Friday, 7:30-9 a.m. About 700 cold packs are prepared each day at the Placerville Senior Center, 937 Spring St. Volunteers may sign up for one or more days of the week, as interested. For more information call (530) 621-6160. The Senior Nutrition Program is a service of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency.

Feb. 14

Sentivo Vineyards and Winery, 7460 Fairplay Road in Fair Play, is having a Valentine’s Day Sunday Mimosa Brunch, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Enjoy the winery’s new sparkling wine along with quiche, salad, croissant and DeepRoots brownie. Reservations are required and can be made online at sentivovineyards.com. 

Oakstone Winery, 6470 Irish Acres Road in Fair Play, is releasing its Dry Farm DeCascabel Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine exhibits all the black cherry and cassis that this vineyard is famous for. Call (530) 620-5303 to make a tasting reservation. Walk-ins are welcome if there is space.

Miraflores Winery, 2120 Four Springs Trail in Placerville, is having lunch on the patio on Valentine’s Day for two. A bottle of Miraflores wine will pair with lunch prepared by Chef Tara Martinez. The menu is beef bourguignon with baguette, red velvet cupcake with vanilla icing with a bottle of  Miraflores red, white or rosé. Call (530) 647-8505 for pre-paid, one hour-long lunch reservations and reserve by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12.

Sierra Vista Vineyards and Winery, 4560 Cabernet Way in Placerville, is serving a Valentine’s Mimosa Brunch on Valentine’s Day, 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sierra Capital Catering will be serving a full brunch. Also enjoy the 2018 Fleur de Montagne Red paired with a chocolate from Annabelle’s Chocolates. Space is limited and reservations are required by Feb. 10 by calling the tasting room at (530) 622-7221.

Toogood Estate Winery, 7280 Fairplay Road in Fair Play, is having a Valentine’s Party — Candlelight and Chocolate in the Cave. Experience wine tasting with chocolate fondue, assorted fruits, sweets and treats. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (530) 620-1910.

The promise and perils of producing children through genetic engineering is explored in “Perfect,” a new play by Jonathan Luskin, presented in an online reading. It is directed by JanLee Marshall (MFA, dramatic art, ’15) and performed by the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance alumni and students. Feb. 18

The California Museum presents California Conversations: Black History Month. Online attendees from 5 to 6 p.m. will hear from Michelle Duster on the legacy of her great-grandmother Ida B. Wells for Black History Month. Duster is a champion of racial and gender equity whose advocacy has led to the creation of public history projects celebrating the achievements of women and African Americans through street names, monuments and historical markers. String quartets by Joseph Bologne and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be performed at noon by music faculty members Dagenais Smiley, violinist; Ellen Ruth Rose, violist; and Susan Lamb Cook, cellist, along with violinist Chase Spruill and violist Cassandra Lynne Richburg.
