Multi-region Australian wine tours become possible with new flight route

November 5, 2021 by ADSWineReporter

Australia’s best known wine regions are set to be connected via a new flight route, giving wine fans a new tour map.

The Adelaide to Newcastle Qantas route, which will begin from March 2022, will connect those outside Adelaide – including the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and the Clare Valley – with the Hunter Valley near Newcastle, Australia.

The new flight path will be the only direct connection between the two destinations and will reportedly save more than two hours travel time compared with connecting through Sydney will mean that wine fans can travel from vineyard to vineyard with ease, making wine tours of Australia’s different regions much easier.

QantasLink CEO John Gissing told Micenet: “Adelaide and Newcastle are both gateways to some of Australia’s best wine regions and we think there’ll be strong demand on the route.”

Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock added: “The Newcastle-Adelaide route is one of the most in-demand and searched for by our customers. We’re incredibly excited that we’re able to deliver another popular service for the region – our sixth new route in 2021.”

The Adelaide to Newcastle route, which opens up new options for groups looking to complete a multi-region wine tour, will offer 10 business and 84 economy seats on an Embraer E190 regional jet aircraft and is already in high demand among oenphiles.

Wineries across the province experience record-breaking start dates for harvest – Kelowna News

November 5, 2021 by ADSWineReporter

Early grape harvest wraps

Photo: Contributed

With this summer’s extreme heat wave followed by a swift transition from growing season to harvest time, winemakers throughout the region reported record-breaking start dates.

“We harvested our Siegerrebe on August 24…the earliest we have ever picked,” said Sasha Masner of Larch Hills Winery in Shuswap.

Meanwhile, in the Thompson Valley, winemaker Galen Barnhardt of Monte Creek Winery had a very similar experience.

“This marks our earliest harvest ever (beating 2015 by one day).” Monte Creek began picking their grapes for sparkling wine on August 18.

While Barclay and other winemakers in parts of the province are reporting lower yields as a result of heat spikes and low rainfall, smaller berries with deeply concentrated flavours as Barclay described go hand-in-hand with high quality premium wines that consumers can look forward to enjoying.

Wine Growers say it is important to note that just as one vintage is never the same twice, one growing season can present a different set of challenges and opportunities depending on where you are in the province.

“British Columbia is a vibrant industry with unique regions, climate, varieties and styles throughout,” says Miles Prodan, president and CEO of WGBC.

What each region has in common is the abundance of “hard-working visionaries who continue to innovate” says Prodan, “we look forward to seeing how the wineries embrace their fruit and create beautifully handcrafted BC wines.”

At this point in time harvest is coming to an end, with most wineries having brought in both red and white varieties off the vine, with the exception of late harvest and ice wine varieties.

Wineries in the Okanagan are also keeping a close eye on the possibility of smoke taint, due to the summer’s massive wildfires.

Portugal: Enjoy a mask-free holiday in the country with an 85% vax rate

November 5, 2021 by ADSWineReporter

If you’re in Lisbon, it’s worth joining the long line of people queuing at patisseries to buy the famous Portuguese custard tart, Pastéis de Nata. “They go very well with coffee and cinnamon,” says Portugal’s Tourism Minister Rita Marquès.

Despite COVID-19 decimating tourism, the minister is very optimistic about Portugal’s future; “People’s perceptions of the country are of a friendly, inclusive and authentic place, but its also being perceived as fashionable, innovative, and modern. And this is this creates a wow effect,” says Marquès.

“If you are a repeat customer you’ll always have the chance to discover new things”.

This “wow effect” is attracting Digital Nomads to the country and Portugal is supporting this.

“We have a very competitive fiscal framework,” and this enables people to “not just have fun or holidays, but to work from here and this is amazing,” she adds.

Discovering inner Portugal

According to Marquès, the COVID-19 crisis provided an opportunity for people to discover inner Portugal.

“So if you are fond of adventures, hiking and biking, you can go to places such as Alentejo or the Douro Valley”.

Alentejo on Portugal’s southwest coast is one of the least-developed, least-populated regions in western Europe. While in the north, the Douro Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world.

“Here you can discover the beautiful terraced vineyards where the port grapes are grown and go on a cruise,” she says.

What are the travel restrictions for Portugal?

If you are travelling from the UK or EU to mainland Portugal and are fully vaccinated you just have to carry your EU Digital COVID Certificate or equivalent.

“You don’t need to take tests on the way in, just comply with the rules and social distancing,” says Marquès.

All passengers need to fill a Passenger Locator Card and if you aren’t vaccinated you will need to take an RT-PCR Test 72 hours before boarding, or a Rapid Antigen Test, 48 hours before boarding.

You don’t need to wear a mask indoors anymore, “but if you want to do it, just do, it’s up to you. We are coming back to normality or at least what we thought was normality”.

“One year ago we were the first country in the world to launch a sanitary seal, and we trained people working in the industry, we had a lot of workshops, seminars and meetings with guests, so they understood the rules,” adds Marquès.

“We’re trying to provide an excellent experience at the end of the day, we don’t want to jeopardise these experiences because of COVID-19”.

Should I visit Portugal in 2022?

Portugal is a “pretty convenient location to get to and excellent value for money” according to Marquès.

“You’ll find nice weather, nice wine and nice beer as well. If you’re a golf lover, we have good courses”.

Portugal is also ” the queen of city breaks,” she says.

“You can go to Lisbon, or Porto for wine. If you are a golf lover or a surf lover, then head to the Algarve or Madeira. Or in Nazaré in the centre of the country, you will find nice waves”.

Which islands are Portuguese?

“As for islands, we have Madeira and Azores, which is a hot spot this year as we have good connections with the island.”

Set in the middle of the Atlantic you can have “a huge, genuine, authentic experience, especially if you are an adventure lover”.

Where can I drink wine in Portugal?

Porto isn’t the only destination for wine lovers in Portugal.

“I like Alentejo from the south of the country or the stronger wine from central Portugal called Marialva. For dessert wine, obviously Port from the north is very good and even Madeira”.

Portugal is “one of the best destinations as far as wine is concerned,” according to the minister, which is why their latest campaign pairs wine with everything from adventure, music, art, wellness and discovery.

When is the best time to visit Portugal?

Portugal has good weather all year round, even in October or March, “there are so many good spots to discover” says the minister.

Sustainable spirits: 10 to try

November 5, 2021 by ADSWineReporter

The process of manufacturing spirits can have a detrimental effect on the environment, if it isn’t done sustainably. Energy use, sourcing of raw ingredients and water management are among the key issues for producers to tackle. Then there’s packaging and distribution methods to consider, as well as dealing with waste.

The good news is that many distillers – big and small – are taking positive steps to reduce their environmental impact. From choosing sustainably sourced raw ingredients to woking with biomass boilers, using renewable energy and putting drinks into recycled packaging.

The following selection of brands – from vodka and gin to whisky, rum and Calvados – are worth seeking out for your eco-friendly drinks cabinet.

Sustainable spirits to try

Absolut Vodka

Sweden’s Absolut is made in the world’s most energy-efficient distillery. Located in Ahus, it’s carbon-neutral and aiming for zero-emissions, zero-waste and 100% recycling by 2040 – all while producing more than half a million bottles of vodka daily. With its iconic bottle design – based on an old medicine bottle – this is a versatile vodka with notes of grain, vanilla and liquorice on the palate. Great in a whole range of cocktails from Bloody Marys to an Espresso Martini. Alcohol 40%

Avallen Calvados

Calvados is an oak-aged apple-based spirit, made in France. Production of Avallen is focused on preserving resources: it takes just 1.2 litres of water to make a bottle of Avallen, compared with 13 litres for the average bottle of bourbon for example. Each bottle actively removes 2.73kg of CO2 from the atmosphere, while the brand is also partnered with 1% for the Planet, donating to organisations and charities that are working to protect bees. In the glass you’ll find aromas of russet apple, green apples and toffee, with a light palate of sweet red apples finishing in a spicy kick. Pair it with tonic water or fresh apple juice and plenty of ice in a long serve. Alc 40%

Bacardi Carta Blanca Rum

Big player Bacardí operates a global initiative called ‘Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future’ which has so far led to a 32-tonne reduction of landfill waste and 90% less carbon emissions at its rum bottling facilities in the US. It works with sustainable sugar-cane farms, aiming for 100% sustainable sourcing by 2022. Carta Blanca is the original Daiquiri rum, used by American mining engineer Jennings Cox when he invented the cocktail recipe in Cuba. Light, creamy palate with notes of tropical fruit and vanilla toffee. Alc 37.5%

Bombay Sapphire Star of Bombay Gin

Bombay’s Laverstoke Mill distillery won a BREEAM award (recognising best practice for sustainability) for its design. Environmentally-friendly features include a biomass boiler that uses byproducts of the distillation process, while the distillery is run on renewable, low-carbon energy such as a hydro-electric turbine. The distillery also sits within a wetland conservation area. Star of Bombay is a premium, small-batch gin, with a punchier taste than the classic Bombay Sapphire. Alc 47.5%

Bullards Coastal Gin

Bullards stands out thanks to its innovative eco-refill pouch project: buy your first ‘bottle for life’ then top it up with pouches of gin, delivered by post. Pop the empty pouch (no envelope or stamp required) in the post box and it will be returned to the distillery, which works with TerraCycle to turn each pouch into plastic granules and that are upcycled into new products. Inspired by the Norfolk coastline, this gin has notes of seaweed and wet stone, like walking over rock pools. There’s a fresh, breezy salinity to the very creamy and textured palate, balanced by some sweet citrus and herb notes, plus a hint of chamomile tea, with a salt and black pepper finish. Makes a great G&T. Alc 40%

Discarded Grape Skin Vodka

Turning trash into treasure is a full-time job for the distilling team at Discarded Spirits, who find clever ways to transform waste ingredients into quality spirits. Their vodka is distilled from grape pomace (the skins, stems and seeds left over from winemaking) and then blended with alcohol extracted from dealcoholised Chardonnay wine. The result is a smooth vodka, with fresh notes of green apple and creamy hints of pear and lychee, that works beautifully in a Vodka Martini. The range also includes Discarded Cascara Vermouth, a sweet style infused with cascara, the discarded fruit of the coffee berry and Discarded Banana Peel Rum, made with banana peel extract. The whole range comes in fully recyclable packaging. Alc 40%

Glengoyne 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

Run by Ian Macleod Distillers, the Glengoyne Scotch distillery uses 100% renewable energy. Located in Dumgoyne, north of Glasgow, the distillery is set within its own wetlands and is a partner to the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, helping to convert CO2 and conserve nature. Matured in ex-Sherry casks, the 12 Year Old is (unusually) an unpeated Highland single malt, which is fruity on the palate and easy-drinking. Alc 43%

Ketel One Vodka

The Nolet Distillery in Schiedam, in the Netherlands, is powered by a giant wind turbine that’s disguised as a traditional Dutch windmill; the surplus energy it generates contributes to the national grid. Brand-owner Diageo has a sustainability policy that includes water management, reducing waste and using recycled packaging. Made from 100% GMO-free European wheat and distilled in small batches, it’s smooth and clean with a crisp citrus flavour and notes of honey, plus a long and lively finish that works well in a Vodka Martini. Alc 40%

Kosenkorva Climate Action Vodka

Aiming to be the world’s most sustainable vodka, Koskenkorva is made from regeneratively farmed barley in Finland. Regenerative agriculture is a holistic cultivation method that aims to transform fields from emission sources of carbon into significant carbon sinks, thus mitigating climate change and protecting biodiversity. If all the farmers in the world transitioned to regenerative farming, it could potentially remove up to 322 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. This single-estate vodka has peppery aromas and a smooth, creamy vanilla palate, with grassy notes and plenty of spicy kick on the finish. Alc 40%

Two Drifters Spiced Rum

The Two Drifters Distillery in Exeter produces a range of carbon negative rums, working with Climeworks and Carbfix to offset any CO2 produced. The electric distillery is run on 100% renewable energy, with electric delivery vehicles and carbon neutral packaging that features lightweight bottles and labels made from waste sugarcane fibres. Light golden brown in colour, the Spiced Rum has a sweet and spicy nose with banana toffee and tropical fruit. The light palate has dry, woody spice notes, plus hints of cardamom, aniseed and liquorice that linger on the finish. Works well in a Dark N Stormy cocktail with ginger beer and lime. Alc 40%

Holiday wines perfect for Thanksgiving

November 5, 2021 by ADSWineReporter

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Thanksgiving is a myriad of flavors and sensations that sometimes wine can get a bit lost with some of the overpowering foods.  The key in food and wine pairing is to make the wine taste good and the food taste good.  Sarah Malik, Associate Professor from Johnson & Wales University has a list of wines that will be perfect for thanksgiving.

Sparkling: Does not have to be Champagne

Prosecco Rose – prosecco was always regarded a bit bland and used for mimosas with the addition of orange juice but over the last couple of years, they have started adding a bit of Pinot Noir to make it pink (always more fun) and give the wine more fruit.  This is a great thanksgiving option. Malik recommends the Borrasca Prosecco Rose for $13.99 (DRY). The Moscato Rose’ is always sweet option at $14.99.

The Rose option is always a safe but good choice. Its light and fruity and will pair well. Malik suggest to try Winzer Zweigelt (grape). Malik is a fan of the Austrian wines as well. Their rose’s and red wines are light and fruity and very affordable -$12.99.  The White option that Malik recommends is Dr. Loosen Riesling. Once again a fruity wine perfect for Turkey and for non-red drinkers. The cost is $20 .

Finally thanksgiving would not be a celebration without having a classic red wine.   Sugarbird Sweet Shiraz – South Africa – $7.99 is always a good choice. Malik is excited about the McBride Sisters Red Blend – $17.49. The story of two sisters who grew up in winemaking countries and found out about each other later on in life is remarkable. They are also one of the black owned wine company in the country and the wine is fantastic.

Centuries-Old Portuguese Tradition Of Winemaking Lives On In New Bedford

November 4, 2021 by ADSWineReporter

In the rear garage of Luzo’s Auto Body Shop, shelves are lined with squeegees, power washers and bottles of polish. But today, nobody’s buffing scratches off a Honda Civic. Today, half a dozen men are making wine.

In Fall River and New Bedford, more than one-third of residents claim Portuguese ancestry. Multiple waves of immigrants arrived here, dating back to the late 1700s when mariners came from Portugal’s Azorean islands to staff the booming whaling industry. To this day, many of these residents connect with their histories and homeland through the centuries-old Portuguese tradition of winemaking. And at Luzo’s, it is an annual custom.

Two men take turns pouring buckets of crushed grapes — a 50-50 mix of zinfandel and Alicante varieties — into the waist-high wooden barrel of a grape press.

Just before the barrel overflows, one man places a wooden disk atop the crushed grapes. He turns a metal crank. With each spin, the disk descends into the barrel, compressing the must. Within seconds, a spout at the bottom of the grape press starts to run.

As the first drops of grape juice splatter into a pail, cheers erupt throughout the garage. It’s like prospectors striking gold.

A man with purple juice and bits of grape coating his handsA man holds open his hands, covered in juice from pressed grapes.

Daniel Ackerman / WCAI

John Pinheiro owns Luzo’s Auto Body. He grew up on Faial Island in the Azores. Pinheiro’s father was the harpooner on a whaling ship in the 1930s and ’40s, but he’d return home to the family farm each fall when the grapes ripened.

Pinheiro recalls friends and family gathering at their adega — a small, countryside cabin — to crush the grapes and ferment wine. The ritual was accompanied by food and song.

But in the late 1950s when Pinheiro was 17, his childhood home was destroyed, buried in ash from a nearby volcanic eruption, along with his family’s farm and adega. They evacuated across the Atlantic to New Bedford. The transition was hard.

“When I left the island, I cried,” says Pinheiro. “If I could swim back when I first came here, I would have.”

New Bedford bore little resemblance to Faial. But Pinheiro’s father kept the winemaking tradition alive.

In 1967, Pinheiro’s father opened Luzo’s Auto Body. Ever since, the shop’s rear garage transforms into an adega for one day each fall.

‘A means to get us all together’

Today, Pinheiro and his collaborators press more than 1,000 pounds of grapes. As the afternoon wears on, more friends and family arrive bearing platters of Portuguese delicacies to share.

Andrew Medeiros, who runs Marvin Grain & Pet Supply, usually sells food for animals. But each October he stocks grapes to supply Pinheiro and other New Bedford wine makers.

Daniel Ackerman / WCAI

“Faial ribs! The famous beans and ribs — delicious!” exclaims Pinheiro as he examines the table of offerings.

Portuguese chatter mixes with the dribbling of grape juice, which the group will soon barrel for fermentation. More than once, they break into song.

The day will yield hundreds of bottles of wine, but the beverage is far from the main attraction.

“This is about friendship, tradition,” says Pinheiro’s longtime friend, Joe Cordeiro. “The wine is just a means to get us all together.”

Throughout the year, Pinheiro distributes bottles of his wine as gifts. The beverage is always a hit. “Sometimes,” says Pinheiro, “people try it and they say, ‘Where can I buy this’?” Pinheiro chuckles. At Luzo’s Auto Shop, the wine is not for sale.

Bibendum’s on-trade project gathers further pace

November 4, 2021 by ADSWineReporter

Bibendum Wine has recruited a trio of top Bordeaux estates for its Bordeaux fine wine project.

The three new estates joining the project, which was launched in partnership with négociant Compagnie Médocaine at the beginning of 2020, comprise Châteaux Beychevelle, Troplong Mondot and Lynch-Bages.

The trio marks the latest in a wave of producers joining the project, including Angélus, Phélan Ségur and Haut-Bailly, who all joined in late September this year.

Bibendum launched the project to enable on-trade customers to buy ex-cellar Bordeaux wines at ‘competitive market prices’, with participating producers agreeing to supply wines directly from their cellars.

The aim of the project is to boost Bordeaux wines’ presence in fine dining restaurants and bars in the UK.

At launch, Bibendum already had a number of premium estates participating in the project. These include Château Pédesclaux and Château d’Issan, owned by the Cruse and Lorenzetti families; Goulée, Pagodes de Cos and Château Cos d’Estournel, owned by Cos d’Estournel; and Château d’Armailhac and Château Clerc Milon, which both form part of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild portfolio.

Welcoming the latest recruits, Robert Mathias, Bibendum wine buyer for the initiative, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted that more leading Bordeaux estates have seen the benefits of joining the project and we look forward to introducing our customers to their incredible wines.’

Château Beychevelle said it was ‘proud to be part of the Bibendum programme’ and looked forward to ‘deploying our wine through their key accounts’.

Château Troplong Mondot added: ‘We are very excited to be part of this marvellous project with Bibendum. This project is so important to carry a wind of change in the consumption of Bordeaux in the UK. We must never forget that wine is made for pleasure before everything. Let’s get Bordeaux back on every table.’

Last year, Bibendum also announced the addition of three new estates. These included AXA Millésimes (Tourelles de Longueville, Château Pichon Baron), Bouygues (Tronquoy-Lalande), and Delon (Potensac and Clos du Marquis).
