Community Conversations

Community Conversations offers a safe format to listen to and learn about the opinions of others in our community. It’s an opportunity to discover shared interests, intentions and goals and to leave behind assumptions, debates, and judgments. Based on conversations and guidelines developed by Living Room Conversations (https://livingroomconversations.org), these conversations provide a guided method for diverse members of the community to engage in intentional conversation about specific and impactful issues. This month’s topic is Listening Courageously. When you think of being courageous, you might think of facing a common fear like the fear of heights or public speaking. Facing fears like these involves discomfort and uncertainty. We might wonder if the potential benefits will outweigh the potential risks. But why might it take courage to listen? How might listening to different points of view make us feel vulnerable or at risk? And what are the possible benefits? This program takes place online in a small group format, and space is limited. Email jverostko@mfrl.org to reserve your place and to receive the link for the online meeting.

When: 1 to 3 p.m.

Virtual — Transient Canvas

Virginia Tech’s Music on Mondays series presents Boston-based contemporary duo Transient Canvas, with their performance titled “Crossroads.” Featuring mostly electroacoustic music, this program seeks to build connections over vast distances through music that is both energetically engulfing and vulnerably fragile. Bass clarinetist Amy Advocat and marimbist Matt Sharrock relish the creative potential of working with living composers, having amassed a varied repertoire of over 80 commissioned works in addition to working with hundreds of student composers from all over the world. In August 2017, their first album, “Sift,” was released to rave reviews. KLANG New Music called it “one of the more refreshing things I’ve heard in recent years.” Go to https://www.performingarts.vt.edu/ for access.

Virtual — Music From the Caribbean: World Premiere of the Clarinet Sonata by Roger J. Henry

Virginia Tech’s Music on Mondays series is delighted to welcome back music professors Yevgeny Dokshansky, clarinet, and Hsiang Tu, piano, in a world premiere of a newly composed clarinet sonata by the Trinidad and Tobago composer Roger J. Henry. Listeners will be enveloped by the sweet sounds of Caribbean music despite the fact that the work was composed entirely while Henry was on lockdown due to COVID-19. The five-movement composition, as the composer has put it, is “a rollercoaster of emotions.” The rhythms, accents and colors of the music of Trinidad and Tobago are further explored in Henry’s Trio No. 2 for clarinet, violin and piano, featuring Virginia Tech’s violin professor John Irrera, which rounds off this colorful and exciting program. Webinar: A Conversation on the Future of Hip Hop in the Academy

Hip hop is a musical genre and culture that emerged in the mid-1970s in New York City and rapidly expanded into a global phenomenon, developing both as an increasingly interdisciplinary art form, and as a cultural practice and discourse that intersects with sociology, political science, English, urban affairs, anthropology, history, marketing, Africana studies, visual arts, dance, technology and more. The extraordinary range of interdisciplinarity in Hip Hop has attracted attention in academia since the late 1980s, and this engagement continues to grow. Through conversation with A.D. Carson, Virginia Tech faculty members and Virginia Tech students, we will explore possible futures for Hip Hop in the academy, based on Carson’s experiences as a professor of Hip Hop in the music department at the University of Virginia, and on the experiences of the VTDITC Hip Hop Studies community. Please register in advance. Go to https://www.performingarts.vt.edu/ and click on the event.
